Although metaphors have incredible value for anyone involved in management, communication, or influence, they are absolutely essential for coaches, hypnotist therapists, and assistants of others.
Here is what Dr. Steven Heller (top hypnosis therapist) said in his wonderful book “Monsters and Magic Wands: Nothing like hypnosis”:
“I believe that all problems and symptoms that arise are metaphors that contain stories about the substance of the problem. Therefore, the therapist’s responsibility is to create metaphors that contain a story that contains (possible) solutions. Metaphor is information … Hypnosis itself is a metaphor in metaphor … ”
It seems that Dr. Milton H Erickson (aka “Miracle Worker”) has a similar view and is the first to use metaphors in hypnosis. Any analysis of the “greatness” of natural language processing will show that metaphor is widely used throughout their work.
